Naonobu had the honor of representing Japan in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as a part of the national roster. Although the team finished in 7th place, his participation in such a prestigious event was a testament to his skill and dedication.

In February 2022, he was diagnosed with this advanced stage of the disease and bravely shared the news on his Instagram account. Unfortunately, his symptoms persisted even after one game, leading to a devastating realization of his condition. Following his hospitalization for various factors, he conducted a public interview in which he candidly admitted to having stomach cancer.

In the face of this challenging diagnosis, Naonobu made the difficult decision to put his volleyball career on hold and focus on overcoming the disease. However, despite his unwavering determination, Naonobu Fujii passed away on March 10th, 2023.

The Toray Arrows, as well as his fans, have been expressing their condolences and sharing heartfelt obituaries for Naonobu across various social media platforms. His departure leaves a void in the volleyball community, and his memory will be cherished by all those who admired his talent and resilience.

Throughout his career, he competed in several matches representing his team against Brazil on March 8, 2021, Iran on January 8, 2021, Poland on July 30, 2021, Italy on July 28, 2021, Canada on July 26, 2021, and Venezuela on July 24, 2021. As a setter, he displayed commendable skills, particularly in the game against Italy, earning him positive game metrics.

Naonobu was also a valuable member of the Japanese national roster team at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Overall, the team finished in 7th place with a score of 8, a set ratio of 1.111, and a point ratio of 1.009. In Pool A, they secured a 3rd place finish.
